DIOCESE OF ALAPPUZHA

History

The Diocese of Alappuzha was established on 11 October 1952 by transferring the parishes and stations of the Cochin Diocese. The boundaries of the Diocese are Kuthiathode canal line on the north, Pampa River at Viyapuram to Thottappally in the south, Vembanad Lake to Pallathuruthi in the east and Arabian Sea in the west. Ancient churches in the Diocese are St.Jacob’s at Palluruthy (1568); the Holy Cross Church at Purakkad (1570); St.Andrew’s at Arthunkal (1581); St.Michael’s at Kattoor (1590); Our Lady’s at Thumboly (1600) and St.George’s at Manakodam (1640). A few other ancient churches built during the period have been destroyed either by coastal erosion or by wars. After the schism of the Coonen Cross, the St.Thomas Christians of the Mission of Saint Andre were reconciled to Rome by Msgr.Guiseppe Sebastian during his second tour of Malabar in 1662. Even after the dominance of Dutch, the Jesuits continued to look after the Christians of this area till 18th Century. Then the mission was taken over by the Carmelite Missionaries and remained under Vicariate of Veropoly till the establishment of old Cochin Diocese in 1886.
Rt.Rev.Peter M.Chenaparampil.D.D. is the Diocesan Bishop from April 28, 1984.
