DIOCESE OF VERAPOLY

History

The Archdiocese of Verapoly was originally known as the Vicariate of Malabar. It was established in 1657. The conquest of Portuguse territories in Malabar and Cochin in 1663 by the Dutch caused serious threat to the Malabar Vicariate. However it survived and the Vicariate of Verapoly established in 1709. The Sees of Cranganore and Cochin which at that time included also in Quilon were annexed to Vicariate of Verapoly. In 1845 Quilon was separated from Verapoly. In 1886, the Vicariate of Verapoly was raised to the status of an Archdiocese. On March 19, 1887 the Catholics of the Syrian Rite were separated from those of Latin Rite and placed under separate administrator and Syrians were exempted from the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Verapoly. The Archdiocese of Verapoly lies in the revenue district of Ernakulam covering an area of 1500 Sq.km. Its headquarters is situated in the Kochi Corporation. The patron of the diocese is St.Joseph.
