Born on October 31, 1943 in Kottayam. Father: Shri K.O. Chandy. Mother: Smt. Baby Chandy. Oommen Chandy is the 19th Chief Minister of Kerala. Oommen Chandy studied at St George High School, Puthuppally CMS College and S B College, Changanassery. He took his law degree from Government Law College, Ernakulam. He started his career through the Kerala Students Union (K.S.U.). He was the president of KSU from 1967 to 1969. He was elected as President of the State Youth Congress in 1970. He was also served as a member A.I.C.C; Minister for Labour from 1977 to 1978; Minister for Home from 1981 to 1982; Minister for Finance from 1991 to1994. He has been elected as a Member of Kerala Legislative Assembly from Puthupally Constituency for the last 35 years consecutively. He was the Convenor of the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) from 2001 to 2004. When Chief Minister A.K. Antony resigned in 2004 consequent on the failure of UDF in the Lok Sabha elections, Ommen Chandy sworn in as the Chief Minister of Kerala. In the general elections to the state legislature, the UDF led by Oommen Chandy lost majority and he was elected as the Leader of Opposition. |
