Born on June 6, 1877. Father: Subramonia Iyer. Mother: Bhagavathy Ammal. Ulloor
S.Parameswar Iyer was a multifarious genius. He was a learned poet, research
scholar, favorite teacher, and ablest administrator. He started his career as a
teacher in the Fort High School, Thiruvananthapuram and later became the Head
Master of the school. Later he was appointed as Tahsildar and held various
offices such as Assistant Secretary to the Government, Curator of the Archeology
Department, Private Secretary to Diwan, Diwan Peshakar and Chief Secretary to
the Government. He started writing poems even while he was a student. His
contribution to the Malayalam literature is precious. His Sahithya Charithram (8
vols.) is the result of Ulloor’s research work. No Indian language has such a
work as that of Sahithya Charitram. His poetical works elevated Malayalam
literature to the newer heights. He wrote more than 25 poems known as Khanda
Kavyams. Umakeralam, Karnabhushanam, Pingala, Bhakthi Deepa, Gadhyamalika,
Sadachara Deepika, Bhasha Sahithyam, Bhasha Chambukkal are his prominent works.
His mahakavyam (long poem) Umaakeralam illustrates a phase in the political
history of Kerala of 17th century. He passed away on June 15, 1949. |
