KOZHIKODE

Kozhikode was the capital of Zamorins. Kozhikode, being a prominent trade and commerce centre of Malabar Coast right from the 13th century, has a prominent place in the international trade map of the country. It was at Kozhokode that Vasco-da-Gama, the adventurous Portuguese navigator anchored his fleet and thereby marked his footprints in the history. When Vasco-da-Gama landed at Kozhikode in 1498, it marked another turning point in the History of India also. Kozhikode was the capital town of erstwhile Malabar district of British province.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Beypore: One of the most important ports of ancient Kerala. Beypore is famous for its shipbuilding. Special sea vessels called Uru, is constructed here.

Kappad Beach: On May 27,1498 Vasco da Gama landed on Kappad beach with three vessels. Located 15 KM away from Kozhikode town, Kappad beach has historical importance and now it is one of the major and beautiful beaches of Kerala.

Peruvennamoozhi:  Kuttyadi dam was  constructed for  irrigation  purposes. This picturesque dam sight has a crocodile farm and birds sanctuary. The dam also provides boating facilities. A Woodlet in the memorial of famous National leaders is another interesting site.

Tusharagiri: Located near Vythiri in Wayanad, Thusharagiri is famous for its trekking tracks. A trekking through the pristine evergreen dense forests populated with exotic birds and wild animals is an unforgettable experience.

Vadakara: Situated on the bank of Kuttiyadi river, Vadakara has a historical fort which is now in ruins. Lokanaarkaavu, a 1500 year old Durga temple, is a must see place. The hero the Vadakkanpattu or the folk songs, Thacholi Othenan, was born here. There are three rock cut caves near the Temple containing interesting murals and carvings.

Apart from these places Kallai, Manichira maidan, Tali temple, Pazassiraja Museum, Art Gallery, Kakkayam, Faroke, Mahe etc… are other important tourist destinations.
