Pathanamthitta can be considered as a pilgrim district of Kerala.  It is an area of hilly terrain of pristine beauty covered with thick forests. The Western Ghats on the east, Kollam district on the south, Alappuzha district on the west and Kottayam and Idukki districts on the north border Pathanamthitta is a prominent place in the production of hill produces in the State. More than fifty per cent of the total area of this district is covered by forests.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Sabarimala: Sabarimala,located at an altitude of 3790 feet.  The most popular Hindu pilgrim center in Kerala. Mandalapooja and Makara Vilakku are the two main events of the pilgrim season which is between November and January.

Aranmula :  Aranmula is famous for the snake boat race held on the last day of the Onam festival. Aranmula is also noted for its crafts and people’s dexterity. The legendary Aranmula Kannadi (Aranmula mirror) comes from this place.

Konni: The place is synonymous with ‘aanakoodu’ or elephant cage. The main attraction here is huge wooden cages where wild elephants are put in and trained for various purposes.

Niranam : The powerful ancient church situated at Niranam, dates back to 52AD. This monument is believed to have been erected by Apostle St.Thomas and is considered the oldest Christian church.Maramon, Cherukolpuzha, Parumala and Manjanikkara are famous pilgrim centers

Perumthenaruvi : Perumthenaruvi is a beautiful natural waterfall in the Pamba river, located 10 KM from Erumeli on the way to Sabarimala, the famous pilgrimage centre of South India. This is a beautiful picnic spot that attract many tourists from inside and outside the district.


Maramon Convention, Cherukolpuzha Convention,  are some of the events and festivals  take place in the district.
