Pattom Thanu Pillai appointed as Punjab Governor. Pattom Thanu Pillai was one of the leaders of independence movement and later became the Chief Minister of Kerala from February 1960 to September 1962. He resigned from the Chief Minister post and R.Sankar was elected as the new Chief Minister.

R.Sankar sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Kerala consequent on the resignation of Pattom A.Thanu Pillai. R.Sankar was the Deputy Chief Minister in the Pattom Ministry. Sankar was a statesman, administrator, educationist, writer, editor and orator. P.T.Chacko, K.A.Damodara Menon, P.P.Ummer Koya, K.T.Achuthan, E.P.Poulose, K.Kunhambu, D.Damodaran Potti, K.Chandrasekharan, M.P.Govindan Nair, and T.A.Thomman were his cabinet colleagues.

State Institute of Languages (Kerala Bhasha Institute) was formally inaugurated by Dr.Thriguna Sen, Union Cabinet Minister for Education. The Kerala Bhasha Institute was established in March 11, 1968 as a part of the 4th Five year plan. The institute aims at delivering the progress in modern knowledge to Malayalam, making the knowledge of science and technology accessible to the common people and preparing and publishing authentic books in University level.

Karur Neelakanta Pillai passed away. Karoor Neelakanta Pillai was a litterateur and founder of Sahithya Pravarthka Sahakarana anghom (Co-operative Society of Litterateurs). He won several awards including Sahithya Academy Award. His main works are Marappavakal, Pathu Kadhakal,Thirangedutha Kadhakal, Rahasyam Ambalapparambil, Poovanpazham, Orupidimannu, Meenkari, Smarakom, Thoopukaran Kochanujathi, Astrologer, Gruhanayika (short stories), Gauri, Hari, Panjiyum Thuniyum (novels).

K.Sukumaran passed away, K. Sukumaran was the Editor of Kerala Kaumudi daily, one of the newspapers in Malayalam. He also served as the President of SNDP (Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam) in 1953-54

C.H.Muhammed Koya passed away. C.H.Muhammed Koya was the leader of Indian Union Muslim League and Chief Minister of Kerala from 12th October 1979 to 1st December 1979. His term as Chief Minister was the shortest one (just 54 days). He also served as the Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1961 and Minister in the cabinet headed by E.M.S.Namboodiripad, C.Achutha Menon, K.Karunakaran, A.K.Antony and P.K.Vasudevan Nair. He was also elected as the Deputy Chief Minister in the cabinet headed by K.Karunakaran.

Government banned plastic products of thickness less than 30 micron in the State.Plastic bags cause many environmental issues. The plastic bags may take years to decompose even if they disposed of properly. If not disposed of properly they can pollute water bodies and clog sewers. It affects the habitat of animals and aquatic species adversely.

Penstock pipes serving water to the Panniyar Hydro Electric Project burst at Vimalacity on Konnathady-Vellathooval Road in Idukki district. The water rushed through the broken pipe killed seven people.

23 persons including a woman were killed after they consumed spurious liquor at Kuttippuram and Wandoor in Malappuram district. A few of them belonged to Tamil Nadu.The victims had reportedly consumed toddy from shops at Kuttippuram, Perasannur, Alathiyur, Pullooral, and Vaniyambalam. The presence of methyl alcohol in toddy was suspected to have caused the deaths.
