1957

APRIL 01
Naya Paise (denominations of coins following decimal system) came into force.  The denominations in circulation were 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 (naya)paise and one rupee which remained as the same pre-decimal value. The word "naya" was dropped in 1964.
APRIL 05
First Ministry headed by EMS Namboodirippad sworn in. This is the first communist government in Asia that came into power through ballot box.

Col. Goda Varma Raja (13 October 1908) died in an aircraft accident.  Col. Goda Varma Raja also known as G.V. Raja, was the founder President of the Kerala State Sports Council. He is also considered the father of Tourism in Kerala.

Finance Minister K.T.George passed away while speaking in the floor of the Legislative Assembly

Kuttikrishna Marar passed away. Kuttikrishna Marar (14 June 1900 – 6 April 1973) was an essayist and literary critic who showed courage to question anything that he felt wrong in the field of literary criticism. His work on Bharathaparyadanam - A critical study of the Mahabharata. He received 'Sahithya Ratnam' award from Pattambi Sree Neelakanda Sanskrit College and 'Sahithya nipunan' award and the Kendra Sahitya Academy Award.

Thiruvananthapuram-Kanya Kumari broad-gauge rail line opened. With this rail connectivity from Kashmir to Kanya Kumari became a reality

Famous play back singer Mehboob passed away. He was one of the most successful playback singers in Malayalam films during 1950s and 1960s, with a good number of hit songs at his credit

Thakazhy Siva Sankara Pillai (17 April 1912) passed away. Popularaly known as Thakazhi, he was a renowned novelist and Jnanpith laureate who enriched Malayalam literature through his several novels and short stories.

Elections to the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies of Kerala held. Congress led United Democratic Front won 16 seats from Kerala, while the Left Democratic Front led by CPI (M) won only 4 seats

General elections to the 13th Kerala Legislative Assembly held.  75.12 per cent polling recorded in the elections

Anoop Jacob and Manjalamkuzhy Ali have been inducted into the cabinet headed by Oommen Chandy. With this, the number of ministers in the Cabinet arose to 21
