"SIGNIFICANT DAYS IN FEBRUARY"

1957
Feb 28.First stage of General Elections to the First Kerala Legislative Assembly held. The election was held in 6 stages. Second stage on 2nd March, third stage on 5th March, fourth state on 7th March, fifth stage on 9th March and final stage on 11th March. Second election to the Lok Sabha was also held along with the assembly elections. M. Umesh Rao was elected unopposed from the Manjeswaram constituency.  Communist Party won 65 out of 120 seats in the Legislative Assembly and formed the first Government of the State. This was the first communist government that came into power through ballot box in the Asian continent.
1959

Feb 06.Anna Chandy appointed as the Kerala High Court Judge. She is the first woman judge in India. She was also the first woman Munsiff in India.

1960

Feb 01.Second General elections to the Kerala Legislative Assembly consequent on the dismissal of the first communist government. Coalition of Congress party, Praja Socialist Party (PSP) and Mulslim League contested and won in the elections against the Communist Party and the Government was formed with Pattom A.Thanu Pilli as the Chief Minister

1962
Feb 24.Elections to the 3rd Lok Sabha held in Kerala State. Polling per cent was 60. Out of 19 seats from Kerala, Indian National Congress and Communist Party 06 seats each, Muslim League 02; Revolutionary Socialist Party 01; Praja Socialist Party 01; and Independents 02.  
1964
Feb 16. P.T. Chacko resigned from R.Sankar Ministry due to certain allegations against him which eventually paved the way for the formation of a new regional party known as Kerala Congress.
1965

Construction of Cochin Shipyard commenced. This is the second shipyard in India.

1966

Feb 06.Bhagavan Sahai assumed charge as the Governor of Kerala

Feb 27.Ponnara Sreedhar passed away.Born in 1899 Ponnara Sredhar was an ardent leader of independence struggle who played a memorable and astonishing role in the freedom movement. He was the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram and MLA in Kerala Legislative Assembly.  He was an Advocate and eminent trade union leader. He was the founder leader of Praja Socialist Party in Kerala.

Feb 02.4th General Elections to the Kerala Legislative Assembly

Feb 02.TERLS (Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station - Now V.S.S.C) dedicated to the nation.

1970

Feb 04.R.Sugathan passed away. Born in 1901 R.Sugathan was a Communist leader and an early trade unionist of Kerala. He was elected to the Travancore-Cochin Assembly in 1952 and the first and second Kerala Legislative Assembly elections in 1957 and 1960 respectively.

Feb 25. Mannathu Padmanabhan passed away. Mannathu Padmanabhan born on 2nd January 1878.  He was one of the greatest organizers we have ever seen. Mannam was the life, soul, spirit and the moving force behind the Nair Service Society. 1971
Feb 21. Kerala Agricultural University came into existence. It is deemed to have come into being with effect from 1st February 1971.(Image: Entrance to the main campus of Kerala Agricultural University at Vellanikkara, Thrissur)
1974

A new political party named as National Democratic Party (NDP) was formed based on the decision of the General Body meeting of the Nair Service Society. The NDP won 5 seats in the next elections held on 1977. The party does not exist now. (Photo: Sri,Ramachandran Nair, the first Chairman of NDP)

1976

Feb 12.Idukki Hydro-Electric project dedicated to the nation. (Photo: Idukki arch dam)

1977

Feb 19.General 5th General elections held in Kerala. United Democratic Front consisting of seven political parties – Congress, National Democratic Party, Communist Party of India, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Kerala Congress (M), Indian Union Muslim League, Praja Socialist Party – won a thumbing majority of 110 seats while the Congress and its allies suffered a major setback in other states owing to the atrocities of Emergency.

1978

Feb 02.G.Sankara Kurup passed away. Born on 3 June 1901G.Sankara Kurup was a great personality who rendered valuable contribution to the growth and development of Malayalam poetry and who created unique form of illustrated verse. He was the first Jnanapeeth laureate of Malayalam. 

1979

Ramu Karyat passed away. Born in 1927 at Kodungallur he was the first show man of Malayalam who directed several good Malayalam films including award winning films like Neelakkuyil, Chemmeen etc. He also served as a Member of Kerala Legislative Assembly.

1980

Feb 21.MILMA (Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation) came into existence

1981

Feb 04.MV Rani Padmini, the first ship built at the Cochin Ship Yard was rolled out. The ship was purchased by the Shipping Corporation of India.

1982

Feb 12.V.T.Bhattathirippad passed away. V. T. Born in 1896, Bhattathiripadwas a social critic, well-known dramatist and a prominent freedom fighter. He encouraged widow marriage in the Brahmin society and tried to reform the conservative practices of the society in general and Namboodiri community in particular. V. T. Bhattathiripad wrote his play Adukkalayil Ninnu Arangathekku which was the first play in Malayalam to have a definite and concrete social objective.

1984
Feb 02.Malabar Cements started functioning at Valayar in Palakkad District. Malabar Cements, a fully owned Government of Kerala undertaking, is the only cement manufacturing unit in the State. The Company was incorporated on 11th April 1978 Company meets about 10% of total cement consumption in Kerala.
1985

Feb 08.Sister Alphonsa and Father Kuriakose Chavara were beatified by Pope John Paul II, in the course of a papal visit to Kerala

1987

Feb 06.Lalithambika Antharjanam passed away. Born in 1909, she was an author and social reformer best known for her literary works in Malayalam language. 

Feb 16.E.K.Nayanar Ministry sworn in consequent on the General Election to Kerala State Assembly and LDF won a majority in the Legislative Assembly.

Feb 23.Ram Dulari Sinha assumed charge as  the Governor of Kerala
1990

Feb 04.Ernakulam district was declared as the first district in India that attained 100 per cent literacy.

 

Feb 09.Names of 7 districts and certain places have been changed from English pronunciation to Malayalam

1991

Feb14.Functioning of 14 District Councils have been started. Government delegated 100 of its administrative powers to the District Councils. Consequent on the formation of three tier Panchayat Raj System, District Councils have become defunct.

1993

Guruvayoor and Kalady declared as National Pilgrim Centres. Guruvayur is the fourth biggest temple in India in terms of the number of pilgrims per day. Kalady is the birth place of Adi Sankara.

1995

Feb 27. K.Karunakaran Ministry resigned.  Consequentially, new council of ministers under the leadership of A.K.Antony sworn into power.

2000
Feb 02.Museum at Krishnapuram Palace, Kayamkulam inaugurated. The palace is maintained by the Archaeological Department of Kerala and contains exhibits that belonged to the Palace and, the Travancore Maharaja Marthanda Varma. Among the many Kerala-style paintings seen in the palace, a distinctly placed mural painting is titled Gajendra Moksham of 154 square feet (14.3 m2) size, which is said to be the largest such find in Kerala. The double edged Kayamkulam Val (sword) is also displayed  here. The palace houses, in its courtyard, one of the four statues of Buddha found in Alapuzha district.

Feb26.Sabarimala has been declared as a National Pilgrim Centre.
2002

Feb 06.Government employees and teachers started indefinite strike that lasts for 32 days demanding restoration of certain benefits enjoyed by them.

2003

Feb 01.Nedungadi Bank, the oldest private bank of Kerala, was taken over by the Punjab National Bank.

Feb 19.Police firing at Muthanga in Wayanad district while initiating to evacuate the tribal encroachers. Sri. Jogi, a tribe was shot to death. Sri.Vinod, Police Constable was also lost his life due to injuries inflicted on him by the encroachers. The entire Wildlife Sanctuary was cleared of encroachments on 19-02-2003.

2006

Feb 06.Prof. S. Guptan Nair passed away. Prof. Guptan Nair was a renowned writer, critic, scholar and orator who had written more than 35 books. He won several awards. His important works include Isangalkappuram, Kranthadarsikal, Srishtiyum Srishtavum, Tagore, Asthiyude Pookkal, Changampuzha — Kaviyum Kavithayum, Manasasmarami.

 

Feb 23.Eminent Writer &. Scholar Prof. M. Krishnan Nair passed away.Prof. M. Krishnan Nair was an eminent literary critic, orator and writer. He served a lecturer of Malayalam Literature at various colleges in Kerala, and retired as the Head of Malayalam Department, Maharaja's College, Ernakulam.His works include Adhunika Malayala Kavitha, M. Krishna Nairude Prabhandangal, Prathibhayude Jwalagni and compilation of Sahithya Varaphalam. Sahithya Varaphalam, has been the most widely read column in the language for about 35 years.
Feb 27.Supreme Court of India ordered to raise water level of Mullaperiyar Dam up to 147 feet.
2009

Feb 22.Foundation stone was laid to the first centre of IISER at Vithura in Thiruvananthapuram District.

2011

2013
Feb 11.Well known Malayalam poet D Vinayachandran passed away. Born in 1946 in Kollam district, he was an advocate of modern style of prose in Malayalam poetry. After his retirement as professor, he was involved totally in literary works. He had won the Sahitya Academy award, Changampuzha award, Asan Smaraka Kavita Puraskaram etc.
     
2019 Feb 21.Destitute-free Kerala (Agathi Rahitha Keralam) programme has been launched in Kerala. The programme aims at total rehabilitation of the destitute by finding them a source of living and developing their social and economic status. The beneficiaries of the project will be provided food, medical help, clothes, welfare pensions, schooling, drinking water and sanitation facilities, power, land and house Destitute-free Kerala Programme is implemented through the Kudumbasree Mission to protect the destitute population of the state and bring them into the social mainstream.  It will be implemented with the support of local self-government institutions
