1956 NOVEMBER 01

The State of Kerala came into existence by combining various Malayalam speaking regions of erstwhile Travancore-Cochin princely states and Malabar district of Madras Province in accordance with the States Reorganization Act

1956 NOVEMBER 20

Dr.B.Ramakrishna Rao assumed charge as the first Governor of Kerala

1957 NOVEMBER1

The University of Travancore was renamed as University of Kerala. This was the only University in Kerala till 1968

1958 NOVEMBER 28

Legislative Assembly passed the Kerala Education Bill. This Act attracted wide criticism from management of educational institutions and ultimately led to Vimochana Samaram (Liberation Struggle) that culminated on the dismissal of the first Communist Government of the State in 1959

 

1960NOVEMBER 1

Kerala Government  introduced pension scheme to very senior citizens

1962 NOVEMBER 28

Established Kerala Lalitha Kala Academy with the objectives of conserving and promoting visual arts: painting, sculpture, architecture, and graphics. It is an autonomous cultural organization of the Government of Kerala

1963 NOVEMBER21

Established Central Tuber Crops Research Institute at Thiruvananthapuram. This is the one and only institute in the world where research on tuber crops have been undertaken

First sodium vapour rocket (Nike Apache rocket, which was imported from the United States) launched from Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) at Thiruvananthapuram for conducting studies on climate and atmosphere.  Thumba found to be very appropriate place as it situates very close to earth's magnetic equator. Launching pad at Thumba is currently used by ISRO for launching sounding rockets

1964NOVEMBER 12

Last Cochin Maharaja Parikshith Thampuran passed away. He ruled the kingdom for a period of one year and when the Travancore and Cochin merged as Travancore-Cochin on 1st July 1949, his rulership came to an end. Thampuram was great scholar who wrote many Sanskrit poems.

 

1966NOVEMBER 17

Sasthragathi, the first science magazine in Malayalam published from Thrissur. Sasthragathi is one of the most popular science monthly in Malayalam published from Ernakulam. Its circulation office is at Kozhikode.

1968 NOVEMBER 22

Naxal uprisings in Kerala. About 50 Naxalites attacked the Madras Special Police camp in the north Kerala village of Pulpally and executed two policemen. The action was meant to force the state government into giving land rights to thousands of poor tenants in the state. Another police station at Thalassery was also attacked by Naxalites.

 

 

1969NOVEMBER1

Coalition ministry led by C.Achutha Menon sworn in. The Ministry was in office from 1st November 1969 to 1st August 1970.

1970 NOVEMBER 30

Massive fire broke out at Guruvayur Temple, Thrissur. In the accident almost all the parts of the temple except the sanctum sanctorum was destroyed and the temple was re-built in its present condition in 1971.

 

1972 NOVEMBER 7

R.Sankar, former Chief Minister and General Secretary of SNDP passed away. He was the third Chief Minister of Kerala (1962-1964) and an able statesman, administrator, orator, educationist and editor. He was also the Deputy Chief Minister of Kerala for a while.

1977 NOVEMBER 1

First World Malayalam Conference organized by the University of Kerala commenced at Thiruvananthapuram. The image shows the first day cover issued by the Postal Department to commemorate the Conference that held from 1st to 7th November

1978 NOVENBER 9

Sri. K.P. Kesava Menon,  Founder Editor of Mathrubhumi and famous Littereaturate, passed away.

1979NOVEMBER 3

Cochin Stock Exchange came into being. The CSE has been playing a vital role in the economic development of the country in general and Kerala in particular. The exchange had a beginning with 5 companies listed in 1978 -79, and had only 14 members. Today the Exchange has more than 508 members and 240 listed companies.

1979 NOVEMBER 10

Cabinet headed by C.H.Mohammed Koya recommended to dissolve Kerala Legislative Assembly and to conduct general elections as he had lost majority.

1980 NOVEMBER 1

Wayanad District came into being as the 12th  district of the State

1980 NOVEMBER 11
Great Kath Kali maestro Guru Chengannur Raman Pillai passed away. Guru Chengannur Raman Pillai was a celebrated Kath Kali artist for his performance of anti-heroic Kathi roles. He was the Palace Dancer of the Travancore Palace.
1980 NOVEMBER 16
Eminent cine artist Jayan (Krishnan Nair) died in a helicopter accident while film shooting is going on. He had acted in more than 120 Malayalam films. He has been acclaimed as the first action hero of Malayalam films

K.P.S.Menon (Kumara Padmanabha Sivasankara Menon) passed away. He was the former ambassador to Russia and China, and Foreign Secretary to Government of India

1984 NOVEMBER 27
M.N.Govindan Nair, former Minister of Kerala and State Secretary of Communist Party of India passed away. He was one of the prominent leaders of Communist Parpty of India and the General Secretary of the undivided Communist Party. He also served as a Member of Parliament and Member of Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1967 and 1971. From 4th October 1970 to 25th March 1977 he was a Minister in the cabinet of C. Achutha Menon and look after the portfolios of Agriculture, Transport, Electricity and Housing. He was the architect of the One Lakh Housing Scheme that won much acclaim in the State.
1989 NOVEMBER 22
General Elections to the Indian Parliament. Kerala recorded 79.24 per cent polling in the elections.
1990 NOVEMBER 19
Acute diesel shortage disrupted vehicular traffic in the State.
1991 NOVEMBER 3
P.Narendranath, famous Littereaturate in the field of Children’s literature, passed away. Born in 1934 at Nellaya in Palakkad District Narendranath was employed in Canara Bank. He has published about 50 children’s literary works. Kunhikoonan, Vikruthiraman, Andha Gayakan, Unni Kathakal, Manassariyum Yanthram, Parayi Petta Panthirukulam are some of his best works that bagged awards

Jyothi Venkitachellam, first woman Governor of Kerala (from 14 October 1977 to 26 October 1982) passed away. She was a Member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and briefly served as a Minister for Prohibition and Women’s Welfare in the C.Rajagopalachari’s cabinet from October 1954 to April 1954 and Minister for Public Health in K.Kamaraj’s ministry from 1962 to 1963.  

1994 NOVEMBER1

First phase of Muvattupuzha Irrigation Project commissioned. The Muvattupuzha valley irrigation project envisages construction of an earthen cum masonry dam of 460 meter length and 23 meter height at Malankara, across Thodupuzha river, one of the tributaries of Muvattupuzha river. The dam will form balancing reservoir to store the tailrace discharge from Moolamattom Power House of Idukki Hydro-Electric Project. The project provides irrigation in Idukki, Ernakulam and Kottayam district. Though the project was started in 1974, it is still incomplete.

Police firing at Koothuparamba towards DYFI volunteers who obstructed the car of M.V.Raghavan, the then Minister for Co-operation and leader of Communist Marxist Party. Five DYFI activists died

United Democratic Front, the ruling front of the Kerala Government, recommended to stop all arrack shops in Kerala with effect from 1st April 1996
1995 NOVEMBER 7
First Wind Farm in Kerala with an objective to produce 23 MW power started functioning at Kanjikkode in Palakkad District. The wind farm is owned and operated by the Kerala State Electricity Board.
1996 NOVEMBER 8

Kerala High Court ordered to avoid Political Activities in Schools. The court also directed not to permit any registered political parties to interfere in the conduct of school elections.

2002 NOVEMBER 19
Dr.K.M.Goerge (Dr. Karimpumannil Mathai George), eminent Malayalam scholar and Littereaturate passed away. He was awarded Padma Sri in 1988 and Padma Bhushan in 2001.
2003 NOVEMBER 02
Kerala’s own Kath kali secures space in the Guinness Book under the make-up category (Chutti). Kath Kali make up is an elaborate and time consuming process that helps in giving a super human look to the actors. The make-up is directly applied to the face of actors and it does not obstruct the full facial expressions. All colours used for make-up are made from natural substances and herbs.

Prof. Narendra Prasad (famous Littereaturate, actor, dramatist and teacher) passed away. He was the Director, School of Letters in the Mahatma Gandhi University
2005 NOVEMBER 09
K.R. Narayanan (Kocheril Raman Narayanan), former President of India passed away. K.R. Narayanan was the 10th President of India. He was elected to this highest office in 1997. He served as Ambassador to Japan, U.K., Thailand, People’s Republic of China, United States of America. He was referred to as the best diplomat of the country. After his retirement from foreign service, he contested to the Lok Sabha and won three times consecutively and served as a Minister for State in the Rajiv Gandhi Cabinet. In 1992, he became the 9th Vice-President of India.
2006 NOVEMBER 12
Democratic Indira Congress (K) merged with the Indian National Congress (I). DIC (K) was founded in May, 2005 by K.Karunakaran, who was a staunch follower of Indian National Congress, founding leader of United Democratic Front and former Chief Minister of Kerala. The party allied with Left Democratic Front in the local-self government elections and won many seats. But when State Legislative Assembly elections were declared, the DIC (K) was not included by the Left Democratic Front and the party could not make any impressions. Now DIC (K) is a defunct political party

Series of earthquakes jolted Idukki district which houses the Mullaperiyar Dam. The earthquakes raised concerns about the safety of Mullaperiyar Dam constructed 117 years ago.

2012 NOVEMBER 23

Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibet visited Kerala from Nov. 23rd to 27th. His visit was to participate in the centenary celebrations of Malankara Orthodox Church. He also visited Sivagiri.

2017 NOVEMBER 15
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Thomas Chandy resigned as Transport Minister from the CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front Cabinet in Kerala. Mr. Chandy has been under fire for alleged violation of various land-related laws and encroachment of the backwaters for his resort in Alappuzha district.
2019 NOVEMBER 10

T.N. (Tirunellai Narayana Iyer ) Seshan passed away. He was the former Chief Election Commissioner form December 12, 1990to December 11, 1996. It was he who introduced radical electoral reforms in India. He was born on 15 December 1932 in Palghat.

2019 NOVEMBER 21
India's first Farmer Welfare Fund Board came into existence in Kerala as a model to the nation. According to the Farmer Welfare Board Act, a farmer who owns not less than 5 cents and more than 15acres of land, with an annual income of less than Rs 5 lakh and main means of livelihood should be farming for minimum three years is eligible for membership in the board. Welfare Fund members are entitled to a personal pension, family pension, sickness benefit, disability benefit, medical assistance, marriage and maternity allowance, education assistance and posthumous benefits.
2019 NOVEMBER 29
Akkitham Achuthan Namboodiri was selected for India’s highest literary honour, the Jnanpith Award for 2019. He was the 6th litterateur who brought Jnanpith Award to Kerala.
2021 NOVEMBER 02

P Valsala, author and social activist has bagged the prestigious Ezhuthachan Award, the highest literary honor given by the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, for her contributions to the field of literature. She is the fourth woman literature to receive the award after it was instituted in 1993. The other women winners are Kamala Surayya (2002), Sugathakumari (2009), and Dr.M. Leelavathi (2010)

The Civil Supplies Department of Kerala started distribution of ATM card-model ‘smart’ ration cards by replacing them with the old ones. It can be used as an identity card as well. It is available in all the five colours in which the existing ration cards are categorized.

2021 NOVEMBER 30
Admiral R. Hari Kumar assumed charge as the 25th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). Hari Kumar, who joined the Indian Navy on 1st January, 1983 is the first Malayali to become the Chief of Navel Staff. He is a native of Thiruvananthapurm. He has won the PVSM in recognition of his “peace-time service of the most exceptional order
