Legislative Assembly passed the Kerala Education Bill. This Act attracted wide criticism from management of educational institutions and ultimately led to Vimochana Samaram (Liberation Struggle) that culminated on the dismissal of the first Communist Government of the State in 1959

Established Kerala Lalitha Kala Academy with the objectives of conserving and promoting visual arts: painting, sculpture, architecture, and graphics. It is an autonomous cultural organization of the Government of Kerala

 

1963 NOVEMBER 21

Established Central Tuber Crops Research Institute at Thiruvananthapuram. This is the one and only institute in the world where research on tuber crops have been undertaken

 
     

1963 NOVEMBER 21

First sodium vapour rocket (Nike Apache rocket, which was imported from the United States) launched from Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) at Thiruvananthapuram for conducting studies on climate and atmosphere.  Thumba found to be very appropriate place as it situates very close to earth's magnetic equator. Launching pad at Thumba is currently used by ISRO for launching sounding rockets

1964 NOVEMBER 12

Last Cochin Maharaja Parikshith Thampuran passed away. He ruled the kingdom for a period of one year and when the Travancore and Cochin merged as Travancore-Cochin on 1st July 1949, his rulership came to an end. Thampuram was great scholar who wrote many Sanskrit poems.

 
     

1966 NOVEMBER 17

Sasthragathi, the first science magazine in Malayalam published from Thrissur. Sasthragathi is one of the most popular science monthly in Malayalam published from Ernakulam. Its circulation office is at Kozhikode.


 

1968 NOVEMBER 22
Naxal uprisings in Kerala. About 50 Naxalites attacked the Madras Special Police camp in the north Kerala village of Pulpally and executed two policemen. The action was meant to force the state government into giving land rights to thousands of poor tenants in the state. Another police station at Thalassery was also attacked by Naxalites

1969 NOVEMBER 01

Coalition ministry led by C.Achutha Menon sworn in. The Ministry was in office from 1st November 1969 to 1st August 1970.

 

 

1970 NOVEMBER 30

Massive fire broke out at Guruvayur Temple, Thrissur. In the accident almost all the parts of the temple except the sanctum sanctorum was destroyed and the temple was re-built in its present condition in 1971.

1972 NOVEMBER 07

R.Sankar, former Chief Minister and General Secretary of SNDP passed away. He was the third Chief Minister of Kerala (1962-1964) and an able statesman, administrator, orator, educationist and editor. He was also the Deputy Chief Minister of Kerala for a while

 

1977 NOVEMBER 01

First World Malayalam Conference organized by the University of Kerala commenced at Thiruvananthapuram. The image shows the first day cover issued by the Postal Department to commemorate the Conference that held from 1st to 7th November

Sri. K.P. Kesava Menon,  Founder Editor of Mathrubhumi and famous Littereaturate, passed away.

 

1979 NOVEMBER 03

Cochin Stock Exchange came into being. The CSE has been playing a vital role in the economic development of the country in general and Kerala in particular. The exchange had a beginning with 5 companies listed in 1978 -79, and had only 14 members. Today the Exchange has more than 508 members and 240 listed companies.

 
     

1979 NOVEMBER 10

Cabinet headed by C.H.Mohammed Koya recommended to dissolve Kerala Legislative Assembly and to conduct general elections as he had lost majority.

 

1980 NOVEMBER 01

Wayanad District came into being as the 12th  district of the State

Great Kath Kali maestro Guru Chengannur Raman Pillai passed away. Guru Chengannur Raman Pillai was a celebrated Kath Kali artist for his performance of anti-heroic Kathi roles. He was the Palace Dancer of the Travancore Palace.

 

1980 NOVEMBER 16

Eminent cine artist Jayan (Krishnan Nair) died in a helicopter accident while film shooting is going on. He had acted in more than 120 Malayalam films. He has been acclaimed as the first action hero of Malayalam films

K.P.S.Menon (Kumara Padmanabha Sivasankara Menon) passed away. He was the former ambassador to Russia and China, and Foreign Secretary to Government of India

1984 NOVEMBER 27

M.N.Govindan Nair, former Minister of Kerala and State Secretary of Communist Party of India passed away. He was one of the prominent leaders of Communist Parpty of India and the General Secretary of the undivided Communist Party. He also served as a Member of Parliament and Member of Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1967 and 1971. From 4th October 1970 to 25th March 1977 he was a Minister in the cabinet of C. Achutha Menon and look after the portfolios of Agriculture, Transport, Electricity and Housing. He was the architect of the One Lakh Housing Scheme that won much acclaim in the State.

 

1989 NOVEMBER 02

R.Sankaranarayanan Thampi, former Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly passed away. Born in 1911 at Alapuzha, Thampi was a follower of Indian National Congress and participated in the freedom struggle. He was elected to the Travancore-Cochin Assembly twice. Later he became a member of Communist Party and elected to the First Kerala Legislative Assembly. He was the first Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly from April 1957 to till the Assembly is dissolved in 1959. As speaker, Thampi was known for his brevity and preciseness of his rulings.He set the standards of unbiased equivocal sharp and decisive parliamentary political procedures. Even today his "Rulings from the Chair" are quoted regularly

 

 

   

1989 NOVEMBER 15
Kadavallur Anyonyam re-started after a long interval of 50 years. Anyonyam is a custom of Vedic debate in which two major Rig Veda practitioners — groups based in Thirunavaya Math and Brahmaswam Math that were once patronised by the Zamorin and Cochin kings.

General Elections to the Indian Parliament. Kerala recorded 79.24 per cent polling in the elections.

Acute diesel shortage disrupted vehicular traffic in the State.

Punalur hanging bridge has been declared as a protected monument. The Punalur suspension bridge crossing the Kallada river is the only one of this type in south India. Built in 1877 by Albert Henry this huge bridge was suspended by three spans and was used for vehicular movement. Construction took more than six years. It is said people hesitated to walk through the bridge after its completion due to fear. In order to prove the strength of the bridge the engineer and his family waited under the bridge in a country boat while six elephants walking through the bridge..

Jyothi Venkitachellam, first woman Governor of Kerala (from 14 October 1977 to 26 October 1982) passed away. She was a Member of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and briefly served as a Minister for Prohibition and Women’s Welfare in the C.Rajagopalachari’s cabinet from October 1954 to April 1954 and Minister for Public Health in K.Kamaraj’s ministry from 1962 to 1963. 

 

 

 

 

1994 NOVEMBER 01

First phase of Muvattupuzha Irrigation Project commissioned. The Muvattupuzha valley irrigation project envisages construction of an earthen cum masonry dam of 460 meter length and 23 meter height at Malankara, across Thodupuzha river, one of the tributaries of Muvattupuzha river. The dam will form balancing reservoir to store the tailrace discharge from Moolamattom Power House of Idukki Hydro-Electric Project. The project provides irrigation in Idukki, Ernakulam and Kottayam district. Though the project was started in 1974, it is still incomplete.

1994 NOVEMBER 25

Police firing at Koothuparamba towards DYFI volunteers who obstructed the car of M.V.Raghavan, the then Minister for Co-operation and leader of Communist Marxist Party. Five DYFI activists died

First Wind Farm in Kerala with an objective to produce 23 MW power started functioning at Kanjikkode in Palakkad District. The wind farm is owned and operated by the Kerala State Electricity Board.

 

1995 NOVEMBER 14

N.N.Pillai passed away. N.N.Pillai was a playwright, actor, theatre director and orator. .

     
 

1996 NOVEMBER 08

Kerala High Court ordered to avoid Political Activities in Schools. The court also directed not to permit any registered political parties to interfere in the conduct of school elections.

1999 NOVEMBER 06

C.R.Kesavan Vaidyer passed away. C.R.Kesavan Vaidyer was a famous Ayurvedic physician, industrialist, educationist and social reformer. He was the founder of “Chandrika” herbal toilet soap.

 
     

2002 NOVEMBER 19

Dr.K.M.Goerge (Dr. Karimpumannil Mathai George), eminent Malayalam scholar and Littereaturate passed away. He was awarded Padma Sri in 1988 and Padma Bhushan in 2001.

 

2003 NOVEMBER 02

Kerala’s own Kathkali secures space in the Guinness Book under the make-up category (Chutti). Kath Kali make up is an elaborate and time consuming process that helps in giving a super human look to the actors. The make-up is directly applied to the face of actors and it does not obstruct the full facial expressions. All colours used for make-up are made from natural substances and herbs

K.R. Narayanan (Kocheril Raman Narayanan), former President of India passed away. K.R. Narayanan was the 10th President of India. He was elected to this highest office in 1997. He served as Ambassador to Japan, U.K., Thailand, People’s Republic of China, United States of America. He was referred to as the best diplomat of the country. After his retirement from foreign service, he contested to the Lok Sabha and won three times consecutively and served as a Minister for State in the Rajiv Gandhi Cabinet. In 1992, he became the 9th Vice-President of India.

 

2006 NOVEMBER 12

Democratic Indira Congress (K) merged with the Indian National Congress (I). DIC (K) was founded in May, 2005 by K.Karunakaran, who was a staunch follower of Indian National Congress, founding leader of United Democratic Front and former Chief Minister of Kerala. The party allied with Left Democratic Front in the local-self government elections and won many seats. But when State Legislative Assembly elections were declared, the DIC (K) was not included by the Left Democratic Front and the party could not make any impressions. Now DIC (K) is a defunct political party

Foundation Stone of the Smart City at Kochi laid.

Series of earthquakes jolted Idukki district which houses the Mullaperiyar Dam. The earthquakes raised concerns about the safety of Mullaperiyar Dam constructed 117 years ago.

Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibet visited Kerala from Nov. 23rd to 27th. His visit was to participate in the centenary celebrations of Malankara Orthodox Church. He also visited Sivagiri.

 

2013 NOVEMBER 19

'She Taxi', a service for women travelers and operated by women entrepreneurs, was launched at Thiruvananthapuram. This is the first initiative of the Gender Park, a newly established institution under the state's department of social justice to work towards gender equity. 
Popular actress Manju Warrier, who was selected as the brand ambassador of 'She Taxi', flagged off the service.

P.Govinda Pillai, popularly known as PG, leftist ideologue, breathed his last around 11.10 pm on Thursday. Born in 1926 at Perumbavoor, PG was elected to the Travancore-Cochin Legislative Assembly in 1951 and represented Pwerumbavoor Constituency of Kerala Legislative Assembly twice. He was the Chief Editor of ‘Deshabhimani’ and Chairman of Press Academy during 1981-82. He wrote many books on Marxian philosophy

 

2013 NOVEMBER 28

Kerala Government decided to grant rights to Non-Resident Indians from the state to cast vote in local-self government elections.

2014 NOVEMBER 09

M.V.Raghavan passed away.

Born on 5th May 1033, M.V.Rghavan (Melathu Veettil Raghavan) (born 5 May 1933 - 9 November 2014) was a veteran Communist leader, former Minister of Kerala, excellent orator and an efficient organizer. He was the General Secretary of Communist Marxist Party (CMP), an alliance partner in the United Democratic Front. Prior to the formation of CMP he was a prominent leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was a Member in the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 11th Kerala Legislative Assembly. He was the President of Pappinisseri Grama Panchayat for a period of 16 years.  He has been minister for Co-operation from 24-06-1991 to 09-05-1996 and from 17-05-2001 to 20-04-2006.  It was he who set up the first fist Medical College under co-operative sector in the country viz. Pariyaram Medical College in Kannur District and Visha Chikitsa Kendram (snake-venom treatment centre) in the state at Pappinisseri.

 

2014 NOVEMBER 11

Kerala has been declared as the first 'total banking state' in India, successfully completing the campaign for total financial inclusion plan (FIP) ensuring banking facility to all families. The declaration was made as every household in all the 14 districts in the state having at least one bank account and the facility for need-based credit.
