The denominations in circulation were 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 (naya)paise and one rupee which remained as the same pre-decimal value.
The word "naya" was dropped in 1964.)

Col. Goda Varma Raja (13 October 1908) died in an aircraft accident.  Col. Goda Varma Raja also known as G.V. Raja, was the founder President of the Kerala State Sports Council. He is also considered the father of Tourism in Kerala.

Kuttikrishna Marar passed away. Kuttikrishna Marar (14 June 1900 – 6 April 1973) was an essayist and literary critic who showed courage to question anything that he felt wrong in the field of literary criticism. His work on Bharathaparyadanam - A critical study of the Mahabharata. He received 'Sahithya Ratnam' award from Pattambi Sree Neelakanda Sanskrit College and 'Sahithya nipunan' award and the Kendra Sahitya Academy Award.

APRIL 16
Puttingal Temple in  Kollam District experienced an explosion and fire after firework celebrations were going on. 111 people were killed and more than 350 were injured, including some with severe burns. The temple and at least 150 houses in the nearby area were damaged by the blast. According to reports the explosion and fire were caused by sparks from a firecracker being used in the fireworks display igniting fireworks in a concrete storehouse. The temple did not have permission from authorities to conduct a fireworks display.

Veteran Kerala Congress leader K M Mani passed away.

K M Mani had been a dominant player in Kerala's coalition politics for over four decades. He had been a Minister for 24 years in various ministries. As the Finance Minister, he presented 13 budgets in the state assembly. Mani, a successful practitioner of pragmatic politics, had handled key portfolios like finance for most Congress-led UDF governments, which came to power alternatively since the late 1970s. He also had brief stint as a minister in the CPI(M)-led LDF ministry in early 1980s. He who was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1965 from Pala constituency of Kottayam district, never lost an election and continued to represent the constituency till his death. He held several key portfolios, including Home Affairs, Finance and Law, Irrigation and law, Revenue and Law in various ministries headed by stalwarts in Kerala politics including C Achutha Menon, P K Vasudevan Nair, K Karunakaran, E K Nayanar, A K Antony and Oommen Chandy. 
     
 

 

     

APRIL 23

The 2019 Indian general election were held in Kerala on 23 April 2019 to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha.  77.84 per cent voters cast their franchise. Main contestants were Congress led United Democratic Front (UDF), CPM led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and BJP led National Democratic Alliance (ND). Results of the election were declared on 23rd May 2019.Out of 20 Lok Sabha seats, UDF won 19 seats and LDF in one seat.

 

2020 APRIL 06

Legendary Musician and music composer MK Arjunan passed away. Popularly known as Arjunan Master, MK Arjunan began his music career by scoring tunes for plays.  Gradually he ventured into the film industry and made a name for himself as “The Master of Melodies.” He made his debut with “Karutha Pournami” in 1968. Thereafter, he never looked back. In a career spanning over 50 years, Arjunan composed many timeless Malayalam songs. He scored music for more than 300 plays and 200 movies in his long and highly successful career.  It was he who gave the first break to music maestros like KJ Yesudas and AR Rahman. He recorded the first song sung by Yesudas, and gave a young Rahman the first opportunity to play keyboard in his band. He won Kerala State Film Award in 2017.
